How to remove streaks from stainless steel appliances

I had some major streaks on my stainless steel kegorator that I couldn't remove. Soap and water had no effect at all. So I looked online and there were quite a few cleaning suggestions: vinegar, club soda, rubbing alcohol, a citrus oil based cleaner, a sheepskin chamois, and Soft Scrub.

I tried a few, but they sucked. Here's what worked for me, a night-and-day difference - in about 5 seconds: olive oil.

I put a small amount of olive oil on a paper towel and wiped away - the streaks were gone immediately and the whole thing shined like it was brand new. I then used it on my streaky and spotty dishwasher and oven and it worked on them as well.

I'm not afraid to say that olive oil is a miracle cleaner for stainless steal. And choosing extra virgin olive oil as your main source of dietary fat, combined with eating a healthy diet that is high in plant foods, may reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Who knew?

It really does work! Another thing I just learned about EVOO is that instead of putting it directly in the pan, you should soak the meat in a bowl and then add that to the pan. I think the good stuff gets burned away if you put it directly in the pan. It is very good for you, according to Oprah!

OMG!!!! This really does work! Over the past two years, I've tried every cleaner I could purchase. Today I got really frustrated and tried water and vinegar. Only minimal results. I decided to google it. The results are truly amazing. My appliances shine as though they were brand new.

FANTASTIC!! YOU ARE A GENIUS!! I've tried everything to get those pesky water streaks off my dishwasher and refrig doors and nothing worked! I ran to get the olive oil and viola! They look like showroom new! thank you, thank you thank you!!

This is beyond awesome! I have tried every stainless steel cleaner, microfiber cloth, and most recently, vinegar, to no avail. At first I tried the olive oil and then finished with the vinegar, and vigorous buffing. Looked exactly the same. Then, I figured out to leave the oil on the fridge and not buff it out. It DOES look brand new, I am ecstatic. Thanks to you and your tip! Amazing what damage a simple dribble of water can do from the icemaker down the side of your fridge.

Grateful thank you!
I too tried everything including vegetable oil, which I had seen on TV. I just got done using the EVOO and it worked great. The impossible water stains disappeared. I found rubbing with the grain of the stainless steel worked best.

Thank you all very much, I have just tried EVOO on my brushed stainless steel appliances that were installed this week. I already wasted my money on a stainless steel cleaner that left streaks despite all all my buffing. I now have muscles like pop-eye... Thanks to EVOO my appliances are streak-free and gleaming... Give it a try

I am so excited to find this little secret. I've been disappointed that my refrig had water streaks and made my whole kitchen look bad. Now after using the olive oil, my stainless steel applicances look new again. I will be letting all my friends with stainless appliances know how to clean them. Thanks so much for passing this along. You have made my day!

I suspect that all the other anyonymi are males too. I'm not ashamed! I admit that I made the streaks and I despaired of ever seeing them and my sins cleansed. I am cured along with my frig. After the dishwasher cools down I expect miracles there too. Not sure yet whether other shiny metal surfaces will react in the same way...

My tenants just moved out and to my horror all the stainless steel appliances where horribly streaked! We tried the ss cleaner to no avail. Saw this post, ran down and voila! I cannot thank you enough. Although there are several areas where it looks like whatever cleaner they used damaged the stainless steel, I am still oh so pleased with the results. Thanks!

Help!! We had a house fire in December and have been in a rental for 9 months. Hope to return home in oct. Don't know what I did, but I have the dreadful streaks on the dishwasher. Used the olive oil, but still see some streaks. The dishwasher was warm from having recently been used. Does that effect the olive oil being effective?

Unbelievable, my ss appliances are 6 years old, have recently been having trouble with streaking, that I never noticed, thinking buildup of stainless cleaer or something, so I googled, the evoo works great, they look brand new! Thank you thank you thank you! Gotta love the internet.

Like so many, I had streaks in my appliances for over a year and I thought they were ruined. I tried several products that claim to "remove" the streaks with no success. When I found this suggestion I was a disbeliever until I tried it. AMAZING results. I still stare at my appliances in astonishment that a product that I had in my house, and cheaper than so many products that I bought, works. Fyi: a friend of mine uses WD40 which was recommended by a technician that went to her house to fix the refrigerator and then used it to clean it to leave it spotless.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is great but should be last finishing step.

For hard smudges or, as I had on stainless steel cook top hood, years of greasy deposit, first use hi quality dish washer soap, water and microfiber cloth. Make sure surface is complete free of greasy dust and soap (your hand should run smoothly on surface) before applying EVOO to get rid of any left over smudges.

EVOO does leave steel surface looking a bit oily. One more step gently polishing with slightly damp microfiber (spring water from bottle or filter) - stroking in one direction only - made surface less oily and perfect.

Thank You! I've tried everything. Wore myself out buffing and cleaning with barely any results with all the other cleaners on the market. I do have a hilarious story to share though. As I went over all my appliances (stove, dishwasher, oven, microwave, toaster oven and fridge) I turned around to see my daughter's cat walking through the kitchen. Al (the cat) proceeded to pause in front of the fridgerator, smell of it, and then began licking the the bottom portion of the door! Couldn't help but laugh! Good news is cleanup was a breeze :-)

Came across this website as was desperate - had used a spray cleaner on ss fridge front - left with spray marks and drip marks - washing up liquid didn't remove, BUT...... when i rubbed olive oil onto door fronts - almost disappeared. Will definitely try to wash with washing up liquid and smear with olive oil afterwards in the future. Thank you soooooooooooo much for this tip.

Wow! Amazing! Tried it on my Whirlpool dishwasher, and all the stains are gone! Tried earlier with a SS cleaner and it just left more stains / shadows. Go olive oil!! I used EVOO. Thanks for this great tip!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have tried everything. I even contacted the manufacture but they were of no help at all. I had stains on my dishwasher and fridge (pretty sure from dishwasher detergent). I was so frustrated at how awful my brand new appliances were looking. After trying the EVOO, the stains are GONE!! I wish I could upload the pictures I took. AMAZING!! I am so pleased :)

WD-40 will do the same as EVOO, try it :) shines it right up. spray your paper towell, then wipe away.

Anonymous said...

OMG....this is MAGIC!!! It did what NO cleaner could do! My cleaning lady even said that my appliances might be permanently streaked! And here I am with everything looking almost new with nothing but a dab of EVOO that was sitting in my pantry for months!

However, I do think cleaning the dust or any tough stains first with some cleaner will make the job of EVOO easier because it works best for de-staining the SS surfaces.

THANKS a TON again!

Anonymous said...

This solution works ... I tried the vinegar, been using a stainless steel cleaner/polisher that I had loved ... this REMOVED water stains. My stainless steel looks so good -- I remember WHY I chose it.

Anonymous said...

I'm so grateful I found this! I used a homemade recipe of cream of tartar and baking soda but didnt have the the peroxide (very foolish of me!) it left horrible streaks on an already older stainless steel fridge, I tried glass plus which made it worse but it's sparkling and looks brand new now, thank you SO much for sharing this it looked dreadful before!

Anonymous said...

The best success I have had is Classic Liquid Carnauba Auto Polish (not car wax). I tried the EVOO oil, but the streaks were still pretty noticeable. You will need to apply elbow grease and may need two applications. But the result is a beautiful shine that is permanent and repels water. I think some of the stainless steel cleaners may actually cause the streaking. Try the auto polish in a small area first. Use a soft cloth dampened for the polish and a clean soft cloth for polishing. I use men’s cotton undershirts which works well. They are soft and lint free.

Anonymous said...

OMG!!!! I inherited a brand-new looking fridge. When I went to wipe a small stain, the streaking started. I tried to clean the whole door and it looked terrible. I bought a special stainless steel cleaner (with serious fumes) and tried that, but to no avail. I was reaching for the WD 40 but decided to just the EVOO. WOW!!!

Oil oil is food and food attracts bacteria. smearing olive oil all over your frig attracts Germs. Having that all over your food storage box doesn't sound too smart to me.

Doris said...

I had the same problem. After talking to a lady that works in the appliance section at Future shop she said that they use Pledge. Use the real spray and not the fake one. Spray it on and wipe it off in a circular motion using a soft cloth. Worked like a charm.

I had tried numerous production cleaners with no success. Also tried some home remedies and the one that gets the gold star is the EVOO. Stain and streaks from trying to clean the SS disappeared after two scrubbings with the soft cloth and EVOO.

I just used this on my 3 day old ss dishwasher front - which had several drips on it - and it worked like magic!!

I had drips on the door of my bottom freezer door on my stainless steel refrigerator and also on my stainless steel dishwasher...tried the olive oil trick. Did not work for me. Just today I discovered something that worked great! I used straight CLR on a paper towel and went over the whole door always going with the grain of the stainless steel. It took the drips off. Then rinsed with warm water and dried with a soft towel. There were some streaks in the stainless but then I finished with the stainless steel cleaner I always use. Zep Stainless Steel cleaner at Target and Ace Hardware. Again always going with the grain of the stainless and buffing it all out with a clean cotton cloth! It turned out great!!!

I had small spots all over one door of my fridge that the SS Cleaner/polish would not remove. I read through the posts here and saw one from "Anonymous November 27, 2011 at 11:26 AM"
Following his advice I took a pearl size of liquid Cascade and smeared on top of a wet (but sufficiently wrung out) microfiber cloth. I wiped the door, rinsed the cloth, wiped again and then dried with paper towels. The spots were GONE! And as a BONUS, when I touched the surface my fingerprints magically disappeared! Didn't even use any EVOO because I have pets and don't want them rubbing on the OO. I am Ecstatic and now going to clean all of my appliances this way from now on.
If you have doubts look at the inside of your stainless dishwasher after washing the dishes. I should have figured this out myself!

Had an issue with streaks on the dishwasher
I thought it was caused by the stainless Steel cleaner I used a few times when new
It was getting worse, even though I stopped using the cleaner years ago under threats from my wife if I ever cleaned it again
Wife was really unhappy with me for years
Told her about the EVOO as I was not going to try it and get in more trouble!
She laughed but tried it anyway
Voila instantly it looked like it is brand new!

I'm hoping that your tips and tricks work, because right now, the dishwasher looks awful. If your tips don't work, I think I'm going to try finding a product that might help.

Just want to say that I was super skeptical about extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) working to remove streaks on my fridge stainless steel -- BUT IT WORKED!! So easy. Don't waste your time trying to buy SS wipes, etc. Just use EVOO.

Anonymous said...

OMG! Thank you so much. I admit I was skeptical but it worked amazingly. I thought my appliances were done for. I wish I had known about this a long time ago! Use it people....don't spend on expensive products that don't work.....save your pennies.

It worked! Other costly stainless steel cleaners did not work on my Whirlpool dishwasher. Lemon oil, Cameo, Repel and Weiman spray to name a few of the losers. I cleaned with vinegar first and then applied.

I was very excited to read this olive oil solution. I don't like stainless steel as it is difficult to maintain but my dad saw this refrigerator and bought it for me. I tried the olive oil trick on the streaks and it was an utter disaster. I wasn't sure how much to use so I started with a very small amount and the streaks were terrible so I added more. After finishing I have to say that my refrigerator looks worse than it did before. The only difference is that the streaks are very shiny and more noticeable now. Also, fingerprints show up more.

I was very careful to go back-and-forth in a straight line with a slight overlap on each stroke. What to do wrong, as before.

Just wan't to let everyone know that if in a pinch you happen to be out of oils or special SS cleaners I used a small amount of white toothpaste on a damp microfibre cloth and wiping with the grain of the fridge the water spots disappeared....I use white toothpaste and a small brush to clean my silver jewelry and thought I would try this on my fridge because nothing else seemed to work. This worked like a dream! I then went over areas with good old windex and a clean dry micro fiber cloth and wiped the residue away to a sparkly clean fridge door :)

I used to work at a fast-food restaurant (big chain), and they would have us go all around the brushed stainless steel appliance and rub them down with something I remember we called "red oil." It was, indeed, an oil that was red. I don't remember the brand name, but it worked like a charm to make the appliances look sparkly and clean. I suspect using EVOO has the same effect.

Awesome, just bought a new home that came with SS appliances - personally I think they look great but would never have purchased for myself - too difficult to keep looking nice - the dishwasher looked the worst - this trick did the "trick" - I was also skeptical, but now looks new again - I would say if it doesn't work for you - you don't have stainless steel...............

Anonymous said...

I tried to use Windex to clean my stainless steel fridge, but it left all these streaks that I couldn't get off! Then I tried vinegar mixed with water, that didn't do anything. I did a search on google to find something that would get rid of the streaks all over my fridge and I found the post about olive oil. So I thought, well nothing to lose by trying it. It worked very well! The fridge doesn't look all streak-y any more! The only downside is my dog likes the taste of oil so as soon as she smelled it, she came over and started licking the fridge! Just have to wipe the oil off as much as you can!

I had large streaks on my SS frig. I've used Weiman's, vinegar, etc. I was bumfuzzled at what to do. I spent too much money to let my frig look like this. So I turned to the internet, which was my saving grace. But anyway, I decided to give the EVOO a try. What would it hurt. To my amazement, IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!!!!!! To whoever discovered this idea, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Thanks so much for this wonderful tip!! My husband and I just installed a new stainless steel Side-by-Side. After we finished there were fingerprints on the stainless steel so I got out a bottle of stainless steel cleaner and all it did was leave streaks that I couldn't get rid of. Now my new fridge looked just like the old one!! I found your tip online and decided to try it on the old stainless steel dishwasher that we are also replacing. The olive oil made it look like new (too bad fixing the bad water pump bearing wasn't going to be that easy!). So, taking a deep breath I tried it on the new fridge and presto - just like you all said - it looks like it did on the showroom floor again! What a relief!! Note: I just used regular olive oil not EVOO but I'm sure it works as well!

I wiped with EVOO then with my sham-wow yes I said it sham-wow they work and what a beautiful shine I have now. Thank you again from this clean freak to another.

Most everyone raves about using evoo to remove streaks from SS.. Seem they are responding to imediate results. I am wondering what it looks like after a week, a month or more?

Anonymous said...

Thank you!!! It really works!

Anonymous said...

It worked, and as an answer for Anonymous above, it is now two months down the track it still looks great. I used the tiniest bit of olive oil on a soft paper towel, made sure it soaked in to the paper towel first and then went with the grain in the steel, it did not leave any residual oiliness on the surface but you can always buff it with a soft cloth if you notice any. Of course you may have to do it again as time goes on, general wear and tear will do that. It got rid of horrible streak marks on my oven that I thought were there forever, they are now gone. Brilliant. Thank you!

Ok...just tried this and it's works well. To the lady who asked what she was doing wrong this is what I did. First I had a long water drip on the bottom freezer of stainless steel frig. I used a damp sponge with Bon Ami (or Bar Keeper's Friend) and scrubbed the area rinse sponge well and wipe off streaks. Then dry with clean t-towel. Then I took a clean microfiber cloth - tipped my bottle of white vinegar a couple times onto it and wiped clean. Buffed with same cloth til dry. Then with another microfiber cloth - using the smallest amount of olive oil - tipped bottle once or twice onto cloth then buff whole section of frig/freezer. Buffing vigorously - put some muscle in it. Then it will shine and look pretty much new. You'll build those biceps as well. Lol!

Yup-olive oil-in fact I used a very small amount of Filippo Berio olive oil on a paper towel and it worked great and I, too, have tried so many stainless steel cleaners. My appliances are almost 5 years old and I understand newer appliances have non-smudge proof surfaces. But I am so happy to finally have a solution and as I am a "little" OCD about how everything looks.

I had a very noticeable streak that mysterious appeared on my new stainless dishwasher door a couple of days ago. I tried two stainless cleaners I had bought, neither worked. Soap and water did nothing. Spit (I’m a man and it works great to shine a pair of leather shoes), but did nothing to eliminate my streak. I did a Bing search and watched a couple of YouTube videos, all trying to sell products that claimed would clean stainless steel before coming across this post. I have some EVOO in the kitchen so though why not. One of the YouTube videos showed a woman smear lard on her refrigerator door to show how well her product worked so I figured olive oil surely could’t harm it. VOILA!! It worked perfectly. And it took all of ~5-seconds to remove the streak. I am amazed!! I am grateful to have found this solution. My dishwasher door is perfect again. Thank you!!

I found my streaks and drips were a result of product buildup no matter what I tried. Barkeepers Friend got rid of the buildup but I didn't want to go through having to strip my appliances? Olive Oil was a miracle cleaner for a time but eventually started to build up also. Amazon sells a product called Milsek SS cleaner that I currently use - for more than a year now I've had no buildup and can happily report that it seems to repel fingerprints etc.
